“Assurance Maladie”, the standard public health insurance fund
“Assurance maladie”, also known as “Sécurité sociale”, reimburses the cost of healthcare (70%) and antenatal and post-natal care. This insurance is mandatory and free of charge.
In France, the terms CPAM (Caisse Primaire d'Assurance Maladie), “Assurance Maladie” and “Sécurité sociale” are frequently used to refer to the same thing.

Private health insurance
Private health insurance is the second component of the public health insurance fund, and primarily covers the remaining amount to be paid after deduction of the cost covered by the public health insurance fund (around 30%). It is not mandatory but is strongly recommended. Some treatments are only partially reimbursed (dental and eye care costs, emergency services) or not reimbursed at all (naturopathic doctors, osteopaths, etc.).
Which supplementary private health insurance should you choose?
The amount reimbursed by the health insurer varies depending on your needs. You can opt for your parents’ health insurance or another mutual insurance fund or take out private health insurance.
